There used to be tracks, now there are bicycle paths

The Iron Bicycle Trail is an almost 55-kilometer long loop route running through the Polish-Czech borderland. The trail runs through five communes: Godów, Jastrzębie-Zdrój, Zebrzydowice, and on the Czech side - Karvina and Petrovice u Karvine.

The leitmotif of the trail is railways, which used to connect these areas, exerting a great influence on the economy and infrastructure. The Iron Bicycle Trail uses old railway lines that have been shut down. Along the entire trail there are rest points. The initial section of the Jastrzębie part of the Iron Bicycle Trail runs through the Szotkówka Valley. On the Jastrzębie-Zdrój section of the Iron Bicycle Trail, every few hundred meters you can find a place where you can rest - there are, among others, four large rest points which can provide shelter from rain.

The trail - apart from places where it intersects with public roads - is excluded from traffic other than bicycle traffic. This makes it safe. It is flat - which is unique considering the undulating terrain of Jastrzębie. It runs through green areas, thanks to which cyclists can take advantage of the shade in the summer, while on cooler days they are not bothered by the wind. Additionally, there is an attraction in the form of a pumptrack in the place of the former Jastrzębie-Ruptawa railway station - for those users who want to have a more off-road cycling experience.

84 bikes and 26 stations!

There are currently as many as 26 city bike rental stations in our city. The number of two-wheelers has also increased - from 61 to 84. These are the so-called fourth generation bikes, operated by the consortium of Orange Polska S.A. and Roovee S.A.
In order to use the city bike, it is necessary to register in the system (using the application or website) and pay the initial fee of PLN 10 (which, if not used for cycling, will be refunded after closing the system). The easiest way to use the city bike is to scan the QR code. However, to ride JASkółka, you do not need a smartphone - you can rent a bike by SMS or by contacting the 24-hour customer service.
The first 20 minutes of riding a city bike in the JASkółka system is free, for each next minute a fee of PLN 0.03 will be charged. Seniors in our city can ride for free (on the basis of a free senior card).

Jastrzębie-Zdrój as the bicycle capital of Poland
Jastrzębie-Zdrój has been taking part in the competition for the title of the “Bicycle Capital of Poland” since its first edition. This honourable title goes to the city whose inhabitants register the most kilometres ridden by bike in an application specially prepared for this purpose.
More information is available on the website of the Bicycle Capital of Poland.
By bike against the traffic!
Since 2017, on 1 Maja Street in Jastrzębie-Zdrój, a special counter-lane has been created for cyclists. After the expansion in 2020, it ends at the parking lot at Słoneczna Street.
Remember that we only ride the counter-lane against the traffic. Let’s not forget about cyclists, especially at intersections where cyclists have priority! So, on Witczaka and Kościuszko streets, vehicle drivers commuting towards the give way sign should look both ways.
Due to the wide bus lane for buses leaving Zdrojowe Roundabout on 1 Maja Street, it was not possible to lead a counter-lane to the roundabout itself. It ends at the parking lot at Słoneczna Street.
Other bicycle solutions were introduced on Dworcowa and Cieszyńska streets in the Tuwima estate. On these roads, a bicycle counter-traffic has been introduced - the possibility of cycling “against the traffic” on one-way street sections, but without a designated bicycle lane. At Dworcowa Street, there is now a convenient shortcut for cyclists traveling from the centre to Przyjaźń and Bogoczowiec estates. In the case of Cieszyńska Street in the Tuwima estate, two-way bicycle traffic was legalized.
